A truck battery that is losing charge or needs premature replacement is a serious inconvenience that could cause expensive downtime. There could be parasitic loads draining the battery or another issue causing the drain. Either way, knowing the cause is the first step to addressing the issue and getting that battery repaired or replaced.

Here are some things that could be draining your battery and how to maintain your heavy fleet batteries:

Unsecured or Loose Battery Cables

Look at your battery if you’re having issues starting your truck. It could be that the battery cables are either loose or unsecured. When the cables aren’t tight enough, the connections can’t properly work, which leads to truck trouble. As part of any pre-trip inspection, it’s important to check those connections. Loose connections along the road can cause battery trouble during an inconvenient or dangerous moment.

The Terminals are Corroded

One key ingredient in battery acid is hydrogen gas, which can lead to corrosion in the terminals. Mostly, you can fix this by simply wiping off the corrosion. Routine checks are a part of battery maintenance and will protect the battery and let fleet drivers keep track of the battery’s condition. However, when you notice large amounts of corrosion, it signifies something more. If that’s the case, it is time to inspect the truck battery properly to find the cause or potentially replace it.

Look for Parasitic Battery Drain

A parasitic battery drain happens when the power generated by the truck battery continues to drain. That drain can happen even when the truck isn’t running, making catching these issues important. While some drain is expected, an excess amount is not normal. Several things can cause this, such as short circuits, under-hood lighting staying on, a computer module issue or relay switches remaining “on.” Inspect your vehicles to ensure there are no unnecessary parasitic drains on your heavy fleet batteries.

The Alternator is Faulty or Worn Out

The alternator is what provides the right amount of voltage to the battery while it’s in use. When the alternator is faulty, it gives an incorrect amount of voltage, and when worn out, it provides an insufficient charge. Routine checks of the battery help catch faulty alternators before it causes troubles or roadside breakdowns.

Professional Inspections are Key

Batteries tend to give early warning signs that they are starting to wear out or run into problems. Routine inspections and pre- and post-trips will catch those issues, but don’t forget fleet maintenance, including battery maintenance.
