If a warning light flickers on your semi-truck’s dashboard, don’t ignore it!

Semi-truck dashboard warning lights play a key role in semi-truck repair diagnostics. Drivers and fleet managers who address these warning lights right away can avoid further damage or the need for repairs to the vehicle. Most importantly, paying close attention to dashboard warning lights will help avoid emergencies or worst-case scenarios while on the roads.

Dashboard warning lights and the symbols used will vary from truck to truck. But overall, these warning lights provide important diagnostic information on the truck’s most crucial components. The warning lights listed below are included on all or most semi-truck dashboards.

Check Engine

The Check Engine light is one of the more all-encompassing and general warning lights and indicates various potential issues. This is an earlier warning to indicate that the vehicle’s engine and main components require inspection. The Check Engine light on the dashboard does not indicate the need to pull over immediately but rather to have it inspected as soon as possible.

ABS

When this light comes on, it indicates an issue with the antilock braking system. This could include different issues with the sensors, wheel bearings, or battery. ABS warning lights should be addressed as soon as possible. While it may not require immediate assistance, drivers should get the ABS issue addressed before travelling any great distances.

Tire Pressure

A tire pressure light is the fastest and simplest to address. It simply indicates low air. While it is a simple problem with an easy fix, low tire pressure can potentially cause serious incidents on the roads, so make sure you top that up!

Oil

A truck’s oil light, displayed with the word “Oil” or an oil can, indicates low oil levels or low pressure. This issue should be addressed right away. If filling the oil does not solve the issue, there is usually more cause for concern.

Coolant

Your semi-truck dashboard warning lights can tell you if your truck is overheating. An overheated engine is a driving hazard that can cause expensive vehicle damage. When the coolant warning light turns on (usually as a thermometer), the engine is about to overheat. Pull over as soon as possible to have the coolant levels and reservoir checked to avoid a costly situation!
