With 2019 seeing a significant change in attitudes and efforts towards a sustainable future, transportation was not far behind. Clean transportation has become a major focus that saw significant advances towards that change in 2019. From zero and near-zero-emission fleets to electric vehicles, clean transportation is no longer an idea, but a real factor in the future of transport.
At Motorplex, we aim to provide fleet maintenance and service that enhances both performance and fuel efficiency. It might be a while before you can adapt your fleet with some of the ideas below, but it’s exciting to know it’s happening in the transportation industry.
Here are some of the eco-friendly transportation trends we saw in 2019:
Clean Fuel: Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Hydrogen fuel is an eco-friendly trend that has now also moved into heavy-duty truck transportation. Hydrogen based fuel works through a chemical reaction involving hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell. When the two mix, the reaction results in electrical energy, as well as heat and water. Instead of harmful carbon dioxide emissions, the only exhaust that is emitted is harmless water vapour.
Hydrogen cars are also able to produce their own electricity, as a result of the reaction. This electrical energy can either be used to power the electric motor or charge a battery that gets stored for later use. With fleet vehicles moving into hydrogen fuel cells, it’ll open up a higher demand for hydrogen refuelling stations. In turn, this will encourage the use of even more hydrogen-powered vehicles for a cleaner future.
Electric Vehicles: Not Just Cars
Electric vehicles have made waves in daily drivers, but now they are also being used in transportation fleets. With heavy-duty electric fleets, the cost of fuel, maintenance and the environmental impact will all be lower. It will also see quieter trucks, as both an added bonus and as well as a necessity for areas with strict noise laws. Much like hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, electric vehicles also don’t release harmful emissions.
Natural Gas: Renewability Is Still Key
Despite the major changes and advances for eco-friendly transport, natural gas remains an eco-friendly option. Since renewability and sustainability go hand in hand, though, renewable natural gas also continues to be a clean option for fleet vehicles. Renewable natural gas is the result of biogas, a result of decomposing organic matter, which is then purified further and turned into clean, reusable energy.
