An engine overhaul is a safe and effective cost-saving measure for some fleet managers. This is especially true for newer vehicles with only engine damage and when compared to replacing the engine or truck outright. The more drivers or fleet managers know about their truck engines, the easier it is to make those cost-saving or time-saving decisions. Getting to know the engine means knowing about all the signs an engine may show when it needs work.

Fleet engine overhaul, as opposed to engine repair for single trucks, is also a more efficient means of maintaining fleet trucks. So, there are things to watch for among fleets of truck engines and smaller companies with one or two trucks.

Signs from the Engine That It Needs an Overhaul

Age and mileage

These are the simplest things to check for and will determine your fleet engine repair intervals. Does the truck’s age, mileage, and use warrant engine repairs yet? On the other hand, does the engine’s age or mileage point to the possible need for an overhaul?

Engine fluids

An inefficient engine may show signs through the oil, coolant, or fuel. Regarding a truck’s gas or diesel fuel, drivers will want to note how many miles they get to the gallon. Moreover, drivers will want to watch for any patterns that show signs of increased fuel consumption. Engines needing an engine overhaul and major repairs may also work through oil or coolant at accelerated rates or show low oil pressure.

Noises

Any strange noises coming from a truck’s engine should be instantly addressed and done so before getting back on the road. Aging or poorly functioning engines needing complete fleet engine repair will often make louder knocking or rattling noises.

Unusual Exhaust

A driver will be, or become, familiar with the type of exhaust fumes released by their truck. More often than not, the exhaust appears like dark grey smoke. However, if you notice anything unusual about the exhaust, like smell or color, it could be a major indication that the engine needs repairs. Engines suffering from major damage or wear and tear may release the white, blue, or completely black exhaust. Each color is a sign to get that engine checked as soon as possible.

When to Make the Overhaul Call

As briefly mentioned above, fleet managers and drivers will need to familiarize themselves with the inner workings of their trucks (and possibly trailers). Once these signs are easier to recognize, it is easier to make the call to overhaul the engine. And there will be considerations aside from the engine and its health. This could include damage or wear and tear on other parts of the truck, the age of the truck or fleet, the company schedule, or budgets.
