Summer heat can pose safety risks to commercial truck drivers and their rigs. To help you avoid these risks and keep your trucks running all summer long, we’ve put together some essential summer safety tips.

Commercial Fleet Maintenance

Let’s deal with the truck first, as a well-maintained semi-truck is vital for safety on the road. We’ve put together a list for preparing your semi-truck for hot weather, but here are the key things you should stay on top of:

  • Checking the coolant levels and radiator cap. Fill the coolant according to the manufacturer’s instructions and replace the cap if it is swollen or cracked.
  • Checking the tires – frequently in hot weather. Tires that get too hot to touch are at risk of blowing out or catching fire. Check for heat, wear and proper inflation.
  • Check the engine oil. Keep up with oil changes and check them before and after every trip.
  • Check the brakes frequently. Hot weather can cause them to lose friction. Give them a break if needed.
  • Schedule regular commercial fleet maintenance to prevent breakdowns and downtime.

Summer Safety Tips for Drivers

Drivers must stay hydrated and protected when the temperature soars. Staying hydrated also keeps you more alert on the road, so drink lots of water and eat healthy, fresh food. If you’re on a long-haul trip, take regular breaks. Use these breaks to walk around the truck and inspect it visually, looking for issues that could give you trouble.

You’ll have your air conditioning running, so double-check your coolant levels at every stop. If you have a vinyl or leather seat, consider covering it with a blanket when you stop for a break so it doesn’t absorb too much heat. Some drivers use cooling towels on the seat to make it more comfortable.

Even sitting in a cab, you must still protect yourself from that sun glaring through the windows. Use sunscreen to protect yourself from diseases like skin cancer.
